Mats has extensive research, development, and management experience from academic research and the pharmaceutical industry after assignments at universities, institutes and companies such as Lund University, Sweden, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States, the Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, Sweden/United States, the Biovitrum Company, the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His primary research interest has been focused on deciphering the molecular details in protein-protein interactions with emphasis on the complex interplay in host-pathogen interactions in the area of infectious diseases. A great deal of his work has been devoted to the structural and functional elucidations of surface-associated proteins on pathogens. For instance, his work resulted in the discovery of a novel secreted virulence determinant from Streptococcus pyogenes including full structural, functional and clinical characterization. Mats currently leads the Higher Order Structure (HOS) group at Amgen, Thousand Oaks, providing biophysical characterization support for the development and marketing of Amgen's biopharmaceutical products.
