Collaborative initiatives are often greater than the sum of their parts. Nowhere is this truer, or more important, than in the healthcare arena. Healthcare challenges are often complex, and solutions are seldom simple, often requiring input and action from multiple stakeholders to move the needle.
Amgen’s new conversation series called Impact2 brings together leaders in patient advocacy and public health to discuss how their shared values and purpose can empower people and patients to make a real difference in their lives.
In the first episode of Impact2, Dr. Darryl Sleep, chief medical officer of Amgen, and Dr. Lisa Waddell, who recently retired from her role as chief medical officer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Foundation, talk about what set them on the path to medical school, their roles in shaping patient care, and the synergies that emerge when working together.
Both began their careers providing one-on-one patient care, but soon they found ways to have a broader impact, improving even more patient lives. They chose different paths—Dr. Sleep moved on to the biopharma industry and Dr. Waddell to a public health non-profit organization—but as you’ll hear, their purpose remained remarkably similar.
They are joined in their conversation by Angela Dunbar and Kinetra Joseph, who lead CDC Foundation initiatives aimed at improving the lives and health of people at risk of or living with cancer and heart disease.
At the heart of all of their work is a common goal: empowering patients to take an active role in their health. “Equipped with the information that they need, patients can become an active participant in defining their own health journey,” says Dr. Sleep. “That is an incredibly powerful position to be in.”
Dr. Waddell agrees. “True community engagement is just so powerful and a reminder to me of how these programs and this partnership are really a model.”
