To develop the ranking, Forbes analyzed all companies in the S&P 500 and selected the 100 highest-scoring companies. The methodology considered R&D spending relative to sales, patents and other intellectual property activity, investor confidence, return on equity, media and social sentiment related to innovation, and assessments of companies' innovation activity.
