Biotech leader Amgen had the grand opening of a new cutting-edge facility on February 26, with a ribbon-cutting event at the site in Central Ohio.
“Our new facility, known as Amgen Ohio, was designed with the latest innovation and technology to deliver safe, reliable medicines for ‘every patient, every time,’” said Bob Bradway, chairman and chief executive officer at Amgen, in a press release. “As part of Amgen's global biomanufacturing network, Amgen Ohio will play an important role in helping us address serious disease around the world with our innovative biomedicines.”
At nearly 300,000 square feet, the Ohio facility is the most advanced of its kind, designed to meet the growing demand for Amgen medications in the U.S.
Amgen has a decades-long reputation for the quality, reliability and sustainability of its operations, and this new facility incorporates the latest innovations in smart manufacturing to uphold that reputation to deliver medicines for seriously ill patients.
“At Amgen, we harness the best of biology and technology in our fight against the world’s toughest diseases,” said Arleen Paulino, Amgen’s senior vice president of Manufacturing, at the event. “We’re also harnessing the collective power of different perspectives and experiences. I’m so proud of Amgen Ohio for fostering an environment where everyone feels valued.”
Amgen Ohio will bring 400 well-paying, full-time local jobs, and $40 million in annual payroll, to the surrounding community, including roles for technicians and engineers, along with quality assurance, quality control, administrative and management positions. Amgen is also working with Columbus State Community College to host an inaugural 18-month manufacturing apprenticeship at the site, aimed at expanding opportunities for skilled individuals without the requirement for a formal bachelor's degree.
“Amgen Ohio is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared vision and a commitment to operational excellence,” said Sandra Rodriguez Toledo, site head for Amgen Ohio.
Amgen first announced plans to build the Amgen Ohio facility in June 2021. Construction of the site took 26 months from groundbreaking to approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2024 – making it the most rapid site completion in Amgen's nearly 45-year history. This new facility is the latest step in a planned expansion of Amgen's U.S. based manufacturing capabilities – another facility is currently under construction in North Carolina.
