Khan Academy Steps Up As COVID-19 Keeps Kids Around the World Home from School

Free online learning platform offers helpful guidance to parents concerned about how to keep their kids learning in the weeks ahead.

As a new week begins, more and more Amgen employees around the world are working from home, often accompanied by their children. It’s a stressful time for parents and Khan Academy is here to help.

Founded in 2005 by Sal Khan, shown above from a visit last year to Amgen Headquarters in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Khan Academy has a mission to “provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.”

For the past several years, the Amgen Foundation has been the exclusive sponsor of Khan Academy’s biology lessons—which now reach more than three million users each month.

“The work that we’ve been able to do over the past ten years with your support uniquely positions us to fill major needs,” said Sal Khan in an email last week to Amgen Foundation President Eduardo Cetlin. “Given our mission, it is our duty to step up even more in this time of crisis.”

Toward that end, Khan Academy is creating new resources for parents, teachers and students to help them get started; offering guidance to school districts about best practices in online learning; and, of course, testing its systems to ensure they can handle what is likely to be a significant increase in traffic in the coming days and weeks.

Sal noted via email: “This crisis will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for millions of people around the world, especially for our most vulnerable populations. It’s because of your support that we’ve been able to adapt and respond as the situation is changing rapidly. Thank you so much.”
